A projection, not a promise. Markets go down as well as up, and the rules may change. Growth runs until December 31 of the year your child turns 17, when contributions stop and the account becomes a traditional IRA. Not affiliated with the U.S. government.

Year by year

How the planner works

  • The growth period. Money can go in until December 31 of the year the child turns 17. After that the account follows traditional IRA rules.
  • Deposits. The $1,000 pilot and the Dell gift go in at the start and do not count toward the yearly limit.
  • The yearly limit. Family, friends and employer money share a $5,000 limit per child per year (indexed for inflation after 2027). An employer can give up to $2,500 per employee, tax free.
  • Investments. Accounts must hold low cost funds that track a U.S. stock index, with fees of 0.1% a year or less. The planner takes the full 0.1% off your growth assumption.
  • Today's dollars. We divide by 2.5% inflation a year so you can compare the result with what money buys now.
